How To Change The Settings In Your Operating System Or Web Browser To Increase The Text Size, Making It Easier To See.

You can make the text on your computer easier to see and read in a number of ways. These guides explain how to increase the text size in your operating system (Windows or Mac). You can also make the text bigger in specific programmes such as web browsers, which will make it easier to surf the internet.

There are three ways to do this…

How To Make The Text Larger In Safari For Mac OS X

This page explains step-by-step how to increase the size of text, or make the entire web page larger, in the Safari web browser running on Mac OS X systems. You can change the settings temporarily, or for every time you surf the internet.

Note: The following abbreviations for keys on the Mac are used: Ctrl is used for the Control key, Apple is used for the Command key, and Alt is used for the Option key. For keyboard access, make sure ‘Full keyboard access’ is turned on – you can turn it on or off by pressing Ctrl + F1 at any time.

Change the text size temporarily

To increase or decrease the magnification of a web page in Safari, press Apple and ‘+‘ (plus) to zoom in, or Apple and ‘–‘ (minus) to zoom out. To return the text to its original size, press Apple + 0.

You can also do this via the menu bar, as shown in Fig 1. Click on ‘View‘, or press Ctrl + F2 to highlight the menu bar and press the right arrow key to open the ‘View‘ drop-down menu. If you want to only change the text size rather than everything on the web page, make sure ‘Zoom Text Only‘ is ticked. You can tick or untick it by clicking on it, or use the arrow keys to highlight it and then press Enter.

Click ‘Zoom In‘ to increase the text size, or ‘Zoom Out‘ to decrease the text size. Alternatively, use the arrow keys to highlight one of the size options and then press Enter. (In older versions of Safari, you need to choose either ‘Make Text Bigger‘ or ‘Make Text Smaller‘).

Set the text size for all web pages you visit

Step 1: Open the ‘Appearance’ window

Click on ‘Safari‘ in the menu bar and then ‘Preferences‘ from the drop-down menu, as shown in Fig 1, or press Apple + ‘ , ‘ (comma).

This will open the window shown in Fig 2. If ‘Appearance’ is not already selected, click on the ‘Appearance‘ icon, or press Ctrl + F5 to highlight any of the icons and then press the right or left arrow keys until ‘Appearance‘ is highlighted and then press the Spacebar.

Step 2: Choose the font size for all web pages you visit

Click on the ‘Select‘ button to the right of the ‘Standard font’ box (in the example in Fig 2, it says ‘Times 16’), or press Tab until the ‘Select‘ button is highlighted and then press the Spacebar. This will open the ‘Fonts’ window, as shown in Fig 3.

Click on the text size you want from the list below the ‘Sizes‘ header. Alternatively, press Ctrl + F6 and then Ctrl + F7 and then press Tab until the box below the ‘Sizes‘ header is highlighted. Enter the text size you want, or press Tab again and then use the up and down arrow keys to scroll through the list until the size you want is highlighted.

When you are happy with your choices, click on the red close button or press Esc to close the ‘Fonts’ window. Click on the red close button or press Esc to close the ‘Appearance’ window and return to Safari.
